Subnetting and VLANs for Security

Subnetting and VLANSs for Security

The place where I stay is a university residence and the network topology is a Star Topology. It is a Star Topology because everyone who connects to this network needs to connect to a hub. The hub here is a wireless hub and is connected to a server in a room.  This network also provides many advantages such as isolation of devices and centralization advantages such as being able to identify devices and fix problems. There are also not disruptions when connecting and removing devices from this network topology.

Below is a picture of the network I would redesign. By adding more topologies in the network, will make it more complex to work with, but the advantage is that for a Bus Topology it’s cheaper to setup than that of a Star. And more hubs and switches can be placed in the network to provide extra layering of security and well as routing of the network can be managed to allow certain packets to flow in specific path and filtering of packets.
Each topology here can be placed on a different subnet to ensure that if one topology gives a problem it can be identified easily. By also adding subnets it can for example let one subnet have more access to the network than the other.
